Sustainable Fishing (Australia 2019)

[press release]
Stamps focus on fishing for a sustainable futureCoinciding with Sustainable Seafood Week 2019 (11-17 March) Australia Post is releasing three striking stamps featuring sustainable fish species on Thursday.

Australia rates highly internationally when it comes to commercial fishing practices, and was the first country in the world to receive independent certification of one of its fisheries from the Marine Stewardship Council.

Professor of Marine System Management at the University of Tasmania Keith Sainsbury, who consulted with Australia Post on the stamps, said: “Sustainable fishing requires keeping fishing to a level that allows it to continue indefinitely, maintaining the integrity of ecosystems, and utilising non-destructive, wild-capture fishing techniques. Encouraging these practices on a global scale is critical to maintaining adequate fish levels and minimising harm to the natural environment.”

The stamps are designed by Sonia Young of the Australia Post Design Studio, using illustrations by Dr Lindsay Marshall, a natural history artist and PhD in shark morphology and fisheries science. The domestic base-rate ($1) stamps feature three sustainable Australian fish species, along with the relevant commercial fishing technique used to minimise environmental impacts.

Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) is a large and slender deep-water species. Commercial Patagonian Toothfish fisheries are located in the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea. Fisheries have developed practices and devices to minimise seabird interactions with longlines, including the use of a bird exclusion device. The device forms a physical and visual barrier around the area where line hauling occurs, preventing seabirds from accessing baited hooks.

Blue Grenadier (Macruronus novaezelandiae) , also known as Hoki, is a bottom-dwelling deep-water fish found in temperate marine waters off New Zealand and Australia. Commercial Blue Grenadier fisheries are located in south-east and southern Australia and off the west coast of Tasmania. Special Seal Excluder Devices (SEDs) are used in fishing nets to help seals swim out nets if they are accidentally caught.

Tiger Flathead (Platycephalus richardsoni) is found from northern New South Wales to western Victoria, including Tasmanian waters. The commercial Tiger Flathead fisheries are located in south-eastern Australia and the Great Australian Bight, and use differently sized mesh in different parts of the fishing net to help non-target or undersized fish to escape.

Products associated with this issue include a first day cover, stamp pack, set of maxicards, minisheet and a booklet of 10 x $1 self-adhesive stamps. The stamps and associated products are available at participating Post Offices, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online at auspost.com.au/stamps, from Thursday 14 March 2019 while stocks last.

Birds in Israel – Coraciiformes (Israel 2019)

Definitive series • Issue date March 5, 2019

The Coraciiformes series includes some of the most colorful bird species found in Israel. These species are known not only for their striking appearance, but also for their sound. While they don’t actually sing, their unique whistles and sounds can be heard from far and wide.

Coraciiformes live throughout the world. Seven species are found in Israel: the European Roller, three Kingfisher species (White-throated, Common and Pied) and three Bee-eaters (European, Little Green and Blue-cheeked).

The birds in this series all have long beaks and eat live prey. Bee-eaters expertly catch flying insects, Kingfishers dive from mid-air into the water to catch fish, while Rollers and some Kingfishers (White-throated) hunt arthropods and small mammals on the ground. These birds typically locate their prey from high exposed vantage points, which makes them perfect “models” for birdwatchers.

The manner in which they seek out their food requires exceptional flying skills as well as unique physiological characteristics. Bee-eaters utilize their wonderful aerobatic abilities to pursue dragonflies and wasps. Kingfishers can locate their prey underwater, dive sharply into the depths and take off again with wet feathers and a fish in their beaks.

All of these species nest in Israel, except for the Common Kingfisher. The nests are made in long horizontal burrows which the Coraciiformes dig in vertical dirt walls. Some of these burrows can be up to two meters long.

The future of the Coraciiformes depends on expansive open habitats with bodies of clean water. Accelerated development processes, expanding urban communities and agricultural areas as well as road-building reduce these habitats and threaten these birds’ continued existence. In addition, the wide-scale use of agricultural pesticides causes a buildup of toxins in their bodies and decreases their food sources. We must preserve their natural habitats in order to continue to enjoy the beauty of these special birds.

European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster)
The Bee-eater is one of the most vibrant birds in Israel. With its long, narrow curved beak it is able to trap bees and wasps in flight. In order to avoid being stung the Bee-eater brings its prey back to its perch and flings it against the surface until the unlucky insect dies.

Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (Merops persicus)
This gentle and elegant looking species is almost completely green. It used to nest in Israel’s northern but today nests only rarely in the Jordan Valley and is considered to be on the brink of extinction.

The discovery of a few new nesting sites in recent years has led to slight optimism regarding the future of this beautiful and special bird.

Little Green Bee-eater (Merops orientalis)
The Little Green is the smallest of the Bee-eater species in Israel, and is the most suited to the desert. It can mostly be seen in southern Israel and along the Dead Sea rift northward to the Sea of Galilee region.

The Little Green is the only one of the three Bee-eater species that remains in Israel year-round and does not migrate.

European Roller (Coracias garrulus)
The European Roller is uniquely colored in shades of blue. When it spreads its wings it reveals bold opposing hues of turquoise, blue and black that are thrilling to behold.

The Rollers’ name stems from its mating flight, which includes aerobatic maneuvers, dives and in-flight rolls.

Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)
The Common Kingfisher is an expert diver that catches its prey by diving steeply into the water from its vantage point high above. Its transparent eyelids and short triangular tongue allow this species to open its beak and keep its eyes open while in the water in order to catch its prey.

Vlieland’s Nature And Architecture (Netherlands 2019)

[press release]
Vlieland to get its own stamp depicting nature and architecture

The well-known ‘Mooi Nederland’ (‘Beautiful Netherlands’) stamp series will be dedicated to the Dutch Frisian Islands in 2019. Today the second stamp sheetlet from this series was published, paying ample attention to Vlieland’s nature and architecture. Stamps about Texel were published last month and later this year PostNL will put the spotlight on Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. There will also be an assembled stamp sheetlet about all five islands.

Scenic beauty
Since 2005, the ‘Beautiful Netherlands’ stamp series has drawn attention to local history, cultural wealth and scenic beauty. This year’s new series about the Dutch Frisian Islands was designed by Birza Design from Deventer.

Recognisable images of Vlieland
In the design of ‘Beautiful Netherlands 2019: Vlieland’, the island shape plays the leading role. This is reflected in the map of Vlieland, which the designers have positioned in miniature on the stamps and in large on the stamp sheetlet. The stamps show recognisable images of the island: the lighthouse on Vuurboetsduin, a whale jaw as a gravestone, the rescue house on the Vliehors nature reserve and a house with a blue wooden gable on Dorpsstraat. The typical shape of the island is also reflected in the design in other ways. For example, the font of the captions is a ‘stencil font’, made up of elements that are separate from each other.

Nature in abundance
Almost all of the photographs used were taken during a working visit to Vlieland by graphic designers Ingmar and Carla Birza in the sunny summer of 2018. Carla Birza describes Vlieland as an island “characterised by an abundance of nature, but without fences. Visiting Vliehors is a special experience due to its vastness, which sometimes makes it difficult to work out where the horizon is. That is something I have experienced almost nowhere else. The north-eastern point from which you can see Terschelling is also beautiful. Of course, with so much nature, you have to be careful when constructing new buildings. On Vlieland, they handle this issue very carefully.”

Availability
The ‘Beautiful Netherlands 2019: Vlieland’ stamp sheetlet features five identical stamps with ‘Nederland 1’, the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for mail in the Netherlands. The stamps are available from 25 February 2019 from PostNL locations on the island of Vlieland and online at postnl.nl/bijzondere-postzegels. The stamps can also be ordered by phone from the Collect Club customer service on telephone number +31 (0)88 – 868 99 00. The validity period is indefinite.

Spring Blooms (Netherlands 2019)

[press release]
Spring bloomers in nature on stamps

They are delicate plants, often with soft colours, which mainly bloom in spring: exotics. Originally they did not come from our country, but they have since acquired a firm spot in Dutch nature. Ten of these exotics have now been depicted on stamps by PostNL.

Colourful spring bloomers
Exotics are plants that used to be planted as ornamental plants on country estates, in monastery gardens and in the grounds of manor houses. These later feral plants are often spring bloomers with striking colourful flowers.

Sensory and associative
The ‘Experience Nature – Exotics’ stamp sheetlet was designed by graphic designer Frank Janse from Gouda. His concept focuses on the sensory and associative aspects of experiencing nature. Janse: “They are all beautiful, high-quality photos. But I didn’t want to limit myself to beautiful pictures of beautiful flowers. The bulbs and tubers also had to make an appearance. For this I edited old botanical drawings, depicting the plant from head to toe – from bulb or tuber to stem, leaves and flowers.”

The beauty of nature
With the new stamps, PostNL shines a spotlight on the diversity of nature in our country. “It’s much greater than we sometimes realise at first,” says Stephan van den Eijnden, PostNL’s commercial director for Mail. “These exotics are a good example. Some of them we all know, such as the snowdrop or the lesser celandine. Others are much more modest and we only notice them if we are looking out for them. Now that they are in bloom, you have the best chance of seeing them!”

Buiten-Beeld
After mammals (2 January) and exotics (25 February), PostNL will release another two other stamp sheetlets in the ‘Experience Nature’ series, with butterflies, trees and leaves taking the spotlight. All of the photos on the stamps are from Buiten-Beeld, the Dutch image database for nature photography. An individual ‘Experience Nature’ stamp sheetlet costs €8.70. The complete series costs €34.80, including a storage folder.

Availability
The ‘Experience Nature – Exotics’ stamp sheetlet consists of ten different stamps marked with ‘Nederland 1’, the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for mail in the Netherlands. The stamps are available from 25 February 2019 from all PostNL sales points, the post office counter in Bruna stores and online at postnl.nl/bijzondere-postzegels. The stamps can also be ordered by phone from the Collect Club customer service on telephone number +31 (0)88 – 868 99 00. The validity period is indefinite.

Mountains In Israel (Israel 2019)

Issue Date: March 5, 2019

[press release]
In the Book of Psalms the poet wrote: “I turn my eyes to the mountains”, asking in times of trouble and distress, “from where will my help come?” High mountains that ascend toward the heavens have been perceived throughout history as sacred sites, places where the gods dwell or as worthy places of prayer to God in heaven.

This was not the only reason that people climbed to the mountaintops. The spectacular scenery visible from the summit, the unique plants that could be found there and the animals that lived solely at great heights all lured the people residing at the foot of the mountain to gather their strength and ascend to the summit. In order to preserve this special environment, some of the most noteworthy mountains in Eretz Israel, such as Mount Meron and Mount Karkom, have been designated as Nature Reserves.

Mount Meron
The Mount Meron range towers above the Upper Galilee region. Soaring to the height of 1204 meters above sea level, Mount Meron is the tallest mountain in Eretz Israel west of the Jordan River and is one of the rainiest areas in Israel, and even has occasional snowfall during the winter months. These conditions allow plants such as the Wild Peony featured on the stamp, which are typical of the mountains in Turkey and Lebanon, to grow on Mount Meron, the southernmost point of their dispersion. Hiking trails are marked around the summit and along the slopes, leading visitors among the mountain’s many delightful natural and archeological treasures. Important prayer sites lie at the foot of the Mount Meron range, the most significant of which are the grave of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai which is sacred to the Jews and the grave of Nabi Sablan, a sacred prophet of the Druze people.

Mount Karkom
In the southwestern Negev Desert, along the banks of the Paran River, the flat summit of Mount Karkom is located 847 meters above sea level. The broad flat upper portion of the mountain sits atop steep slopes that soar 200 meters above the surrounding area. The view from the top of Mount Karkom is breathtaking, allowing visitors to see large parts of the arid southern Negev Desert as well as the Sinai Desert. More than 40,000 rock drawings have been discovered on Mount Karkom and in the immediate area. These were carved by humans and include figures such as the Long Horned Deer that appears on the stamp. Many of the rock drawings show humans with their arms outstretched toward the heavens as if in prayer. The aridness of the area surrounding the mountain (which does not allow permanent inhabitance) along with the existence of the many rock drawings have led researchers to conclude that Mount Karkom served as a sacred place of worship and prayer, visited by caravans of merchants passing through the area and groups of believers who travelled there from distant lands. Prof. Emmanuel Anati, who devoted many years to researching the site, identified Mount Karkom as the Mount Sinai noted in the Bible, however this opinion is not accepted by most researchers in the field.

Single-Frame Championship Moving to Saint Louis

[press release]

The St. Louis Stamp Expo will be the site for the Single Frame Champion of Champions competition, beginning with the March 27-29, 2020 show. The announcement was made recently by Mike Ley, president of the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors (AAPE), which sponsors the competition. The agreement is for three years.

This year, the competition was held at the joint AmeriStamp Expo/Aripex, Feb. 15-17 in Mesa, AZ. The Single Frame Champion of Champions began in 2000 and has always been held in conjunction with AmeriStamp Expo, sponsored by the American Philatelic Society (APS). That show has been discontinued.

Ley indicated that five World Series of Philately shows submitted proposals to host the competition. St. Louis Stamp Expo was chosen for its proximity to the airport, reasonable room rates, and cooperation from the show committee. The agreement may be extended after the initial three years, or the competition moved to another show at the request of either party.

Doug Weisz (shown at left) won this year’s Single Frame Champion of Champions with his exhibit, New Orleans in the Confederate Mail System.

Australians Do More Online Shopping In November

[press release]
Australia’s busiest online shopping week no longer in December

Australians are fast adopting international shopping traditions with Black Friday and Cyber Monday combining to form the busiest online shopping week in the country, according to the latest research by Australia Post.

The Inside Australian Online Shopping preview found that the two significant shopping events recorded growth of 28.7 per cent year-on-year – indicating shoppers are ticking off their Christmas lists earlier than ever before.

The research also showed that our love for online bargain hunting remains strong, with growth of around 24 per cent year-on-year across all major shopping events in Australia.

General Manager Parcel & Express Services, Ben Franzi, said the research shows a continuing shift in the timing and channels shoppers use to make their key purchases.

“Traditionally, the first week of December was the peak for online sales. Now, it’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday – which strongly suggests that more Aussies are doing their Christmas shopping online and earlier than ever before.”

“Importantly, this signals to retailers they need to consider timing their sales earlier to grab a slice of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday pie.

“Australians are getting savvier with how they shop, and are starting to purchase seasonal items that they might usually buy instore. For example, in the second week of December we saw a marked increase in online purchasing of specialty food and liquor – resulting in a growth of 41 per cent year-on-year.

“We know that customers are increasingly drawn to the convenience and stress-free experience of online shopping – Paypal reports that 70[i] per cent of Australians find online shopping less stressful than going in-store,” said Mr Franzi.

Key data, year-on-year:

Significant online shopping events:

  • May Mayhem: up 25.1 per cent
  • EOFYS: up 30 per cent
  • Click Frenzy: up 13.5 per cent
  • Black Friday/Cyber Monday: up 28.7 per cent
  • Boxing Day: up 24 per cent

Popular pre-Christmas categories:

  • Black Friday/Cyber Monday: Cosmetics at 54 per cent
  • Second week of December:
    • Specialty Food & Liquor: 41 per cent
    • Variety stores: 56 per cent

Royal Mail has revealed the images of the Marvel Super Hero stamps issued to mark the UK’s celebration of Marvel’s iconic comic stories.

The 15-stamp set features some of the most popular Super Heroes from the comic books.

Ten stamps show: Spider-Man; Hulk; Thor; Iron Man; Doctor Strange; Captain Marvel; Peggy Carter; Black Panther; Captain Britain and Union Jack. A further five stamps are part of an exclusive short comic strip story contained in a miniature sheet.

The world-famous Marvel Comics grew out of Timely Comics, which in 1939 published its first comic book, Marvel Comics #1.

Editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby created a Super Hero revolution when they devised a new world of characters in the early 1960s, including Hulk and Thor.

In 1963, Lee and Steve Ditko hit upon a new idea for a hero; a teenager who accidentally takes on Super Hero abilities – and tested it out in a magazine that was about to be retired. However, the character caught the attention of the readers and Spider-Man was born.

In 1972, Marvel UK was formed, publishing weekly comics that repackaged the stories for a British audience. This changed in 1976 when Captain Britain Weekly was launched, featuring the adventures of the first Marvel Super Hero created for the UK.The 1980s, in particular, saw US comic publishers heavily recruiting British writers and illustrators, who increasingly worked on the American publications and began to inject darker storylines to widen the appeal of the characters. One such artist is Alan Davis, who designed the new Special Stamps, and has worked with Marvel since the early 1980s and first illustrated Captain Britain in 1985.

A specially-created story, also illustrated by Davis, features five further stamps printed in a miniature sheet. The story, entitled Avengers UK, sees Captain Britain rallying Super Heroes to face the arch villain Thanos.

Stamp illustrator, artist, Alan Davis, said: “I really can’t take all the credit for producing these stamps. The speed of production required in US comics makes it necessary to separate the creative disciplines into four individual jobs. Writer, penciller, inker and colourist. My primary focus is writing and pencilling.

“My long-time collaborator Mark Farmer supplied the blackline inks for the stamps and Laura Martin added the colour.”

Philip Parker, Royal Mail, said: “Generations have grown up, spellbound by the adventures and the personalities of these Super Heroes. Our epic new stamps celebrate each in characteristic pose, emerging from the stamp frame.”

The stamps and a range of collectible products are available now to pre-order from www.royalmail.com/marvel and go on general sale from Thursday 14 March by phone on 03457 641 641 and in 7,000 Post Offices throughout the UK.
