AFDCS Goes to Plan B After GASS 2024

AFDCS Post-GASS Sunday Dinner: We’re going to Plan B. Literally. That’s the name of the restaurant, Plan b Burger Bar, about a five-minute walk from the convention center and Marriott. We’ll meet in the Marriott lobby at 6 p.m., and we will have a private room. You can find the menu here.

As always, the post-show dinner is “Dutch treat:” We’ll each get separate checks. Spouses, partners and friends are welcome, whether or not they are AFDCS members.

Plethora of Postmarks for Great American Stamp Show

There will be at least two pictorial postmarks for each day of Great American Stamp Show 2024 in August 15-18 in Hartford, Conn., and sometimes more.

One set of postmarks for each day of the show are for the “GASS Station.” A second set, for the “Americover Station,” was created by the American First Day Cover Society, one of the co-sponsors of the show. The only “official” show cachets for GASS are from the AFDCS.

All eight postmarks were designed by Martin Kent Miller, editor of the journals of GASS co-sponsors the AFDCS and the American Topical Association and a professional marketing and graphics consultant.

Here are the four GASS Station postmarks:

When Americover was the independent show and convention of the AFDCS, a different pictorial postmark was available for each day of the show, and that tradition has continued now that Americover is part of GASS.

The Thursday, August 15, Americover postmark is “Celebrating Public Art in America,” in concordance with the American Philatelic Society’s “Stamp Soiree” at the Wadsworth Atheneum art museum that evening. The postmark, which measures 2.83- by 1.71-inches, may also be used on first day covers of the U.S. Pinback Buttons stamps that are being issued that day.

The GASS 2024 show cachet, by award-winning professional artist and Connecticut native Chris Calle, will show a variety of the pinback buttons produced since the first Americover in 1993.

Friday August 16’s postmark honors Hartford’s Charter Oak, the legendary tree that is a symbol of American independence. The U.S. Postal Service is issuing its Autumn Colors stamps that day, and no doubt, before it fell in an 1856 storm, the Charter Oak’s leaves turned colors in the fall. That postmark is 2.95- by 1.56-inches.

Calle’s cachet for Friday also depicts the Charter Oak tree, and the 1935 stamp and commemorative coin that honored it.

 

 

 

On Saturday, when the GASS Cachetmakers Bourse will be held, the Americover Station postmark notes National Cachetmakers Day. This one is 2.91- by 1.69-inches. The show cover cachet by Calle commemorates the 250th anniversary of the First Continental Congress (for which a stamp will be issued in September) and Connecticut’s delegate to it, Roger Sherman. He also was a member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and a key Founding Father of the U.S.

The 10-cent stamp shown in the cachet is one of four issued by the U.S. Postal Service in 1974 as part of its Bicentennial celebration

 

 

Sunday’s Americover Station postmark, measuring 2.92- by 1.69-inches, is “Celebrating Heroes of the Batter’s Box.” Calle’s cachet artwork honors Hartford resident Samuel Clemens, better known as author Mark Twain, who was an avid baseball fan and supported local teams. The Hartford Dark Blues were a charter member of the National League in 1876-77, a few years after Clemens moved to the city. (The Hartford Yard Goats, a professional minor league (Double-A) baseball team affiliated with the Colorado Rockies, will be playing at home during GASS 2024.)

Both Miller and Calle will be at Great American Stamp Show for all four days. Calle, in fact, has a station at the AFDCS booth where he will be available to chat with collectors and sign autographs. Miller will be splitting his time between the ATA and AFDCS booths.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service has its own postmarks for the two issues that will be released during the show, Pinback Buttons

And Autumn Colors

Thursday’s show postmarks may be used on first day covers of Pinback Buttons, and Friday’s on Autumn Colors FDCs, but Friday’s may not be used on the stamps issued the day before (that is, creating a bogus “early release” FDC for Pinback Buttons).

The AFDCS will be selling unserviced cacheted envelopes and already-serviced covers like this one, both at its booth and, after the show, by mail.

AFDCS Announces Americover 2024 Postmarks

These are subject to approval by the US Postal Service and will be available at Great American Stamp Show 2024. The first two may be used on first day covers for Pinback Buttons and Autumn Colors, respectively.

Americover was the independent show and FDC celebration of the American First Day Cover Society from 1993 through 2019. It was slated to become part of Great American Stamp Show in 2020, but that was pushed back by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amos Media and Shepherd Expos Management Launch Tampa, Florida Show
Philatelic section will be part of the first Great American Coin and Collectibles Show, September 11-14, 2024

For the first time in the 148-year history of what today is Amos Media, publisher of Linn’s Stamps News (www.Linns.com), Coin World, and the Scott stamp catalogues, the company is directly involved in the creation of a show for collectors and dealers. In partnership with Shepherd Expos Management, the inaugural Great American Coin and Collectibles Show (www.GACC.show) will be held in Florida at the acclaimed Tampa Convention Center [right], September 11-14, 2024.

When word about the new show began to spread, a number of stamp dealers made inquiries about the availability of booth space, according to show planner Larry Shepherd. The Tampa show will include a philatelic section specifically for collectors and dealers of stamps, covers, and other philatelic items.

“For more than a year, we have been working on hosting a collectibles show. After watching the success Larry had with turning around the Central States Numismatic Society show we were convinced that a fresh, innovative approach would be welcomed,” said Amos Media Chairman Rick Amos [left].

“Coin and stamp shows have not changed much in 50 years, and we need to bring the concept into the 21st century. The ability to sell and buy online is a significant part of today’s marketplace, but we believe it is still vitally important to be able to see coins, bank notes, and stamps in person and to conduct transactions face-to-face, as well as offer in-person educational opportunities,” explained Amos.

“When Larry [right] became available, we were excited to partner with a proven professional who knows how to plan and deliver a successful show. He developed ways to make shows more relevant with new innovations for a new generation of collectors and dealers. Larry has a proven track record of professional show management success,” stated Amos.

Initial plans include a large bourse space that can accommodate nearly 600 dealers’ tables with between 30 and 50 tables in the philatelic section. There will also be a separate collectors’ annex with another 60 to 70 tables offering coins and other collectibles. A dealer-to-dealer trading day will be available for all table holders on September 10, the day before the show opens to the public.

Also, although the show ends on Saturday, September 14, the guarded security room will be open through, Monday, September 16, for the convenience of dealers and visitors who want to store their valuables while exploring the many Florida attractions and activities.

Significant discounts at seven Hilton and Marriott hotel properties near the convention center are available with rates starting as low as $159 per night.

“We encourage dealers and collectors to book their accommodations as early as possible to take advantage of the special rates while they are available,” said Shepherd.

Boston 2026 Bulletin #1 Available

Bulletin #1 for Boston 2026 World Expo has just been released in digital format and is available for viewing and downloading at Boston2026.org.

This first of two expected bulletins contains over 50 pages introducing readers to the composition of the one-a-decade U.S. international exhibition through the people and organizations making it possible.

Boston 2026 President Yamil Kouri said, “Much work has gone into this informative booklet that will answer most questions potential attendees and participants have. We’ve also included several articles about greater Boston’s historical significance to the nation’s founding along with their philatelic tie-ins.”

Initial show hotel information is included. At this point arrangements have been made with eight hotels within walking distance of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, site of the show. More affordable options are being sought further away from the city center but easily accessible using the many public transportation options Boston offers. Reservations for all offerings will be available starting in the Spring of 2025.

Donors are gratefully acknowledged across several pages. Donation levels are explained with various thank-you premiums associated to each, including admittance to the Minuteman Club. As a recognized 501(c)3 organization donations may be tax-deductible to U.S. contributors who itemize.

Bulletin #1 features a listing of current booth holders, numbering over 75. Booth space is still available for 4- or 8-day options. Mystic Co. Adds $25K to Boston 2026

Boston 2026 Received $25,000 from Mystic Stamp Company

On the heels of a personal donation from its president, Donald J. Sundman, Mystic Stamp Company has come forth with its own $25,000 donation to Boston 2026 World Expo.

Yamil Kouri, Boston 2026 President, welcomed the contribution saying, “We continue to be amazed at the generosity of the entire Mystic organization in their backing of America’s next international exhibition. The company’s slogan as ‘America’s Leading Stamp Dealer’ is certainly befitting their support of the show.”

As mentioned in a prior press release Mystic became a 100% employee-owned company in April 2021 with the Sundmans continuing their positions—Donald as president and wife Chacea as director of human resources. The 110-employee business is based in Camden, New York, specializing in the buying and selling of postage stamps, collecting supplies, and other philatelic items.

The firm’s annual U.S. Stamp Catalog is one of the most comprehensive featuring over 160 pages depicting 4,800 stamps in full color along with other must-haves for collectors. Booths All But Gone at Great American Stamp Show 2024

There are only a handful of dealer booths and society tables left for Great American Stamp Show 2024 (August 15-18 in Hartford, Conn.) Societies that aren’t sure whether to take a table (which involves a commitment to STAFF it) should consider sharing with another society. The same is true if all the society tables are gone: Share. You’ll find the links for societies, dealers and more here.

Don’t think this is a fluke because the show is in the Northeast. Next year will be even tighter: It’s a smaller space. Moral of the story: Book early, whether it’s booth space, hotel rooms or anything else. (Some may call me “Lloyd the Late,” but I made my hotel reservation in mid-November.)

No Division Here: Civil War Group Donates to Boston 2026

Civil War Philatelic Society Donates to Boston 2026 World Expo

Daniel Knowles, President of the Civil War Philatelic Society, emailed Boston 2026 World Expo officers that the organization is making a total donation of $5,000.

He continued his message saying that the CWPS members, trustees and officers all look forward to participating in the show by holding meetings and presentations along with sharing a society booth with the Carrier and Locals Society.

Founded as the Confederate Stamp Alliance in 1935 by Dr. Marye Y. Dabney and August Dietz, the group broadened its collecting focus in 2020 by inviting all collectors of Civil War philately to become members and renaming the organization to reflect this. Income from dues and a permanent endowment allows the CWPS to support member benefits while continuing to research, publish and promote the many aspects of philately of the era.

The organization’s web site at www.civilwarphilatelicsociety.org details the offerings of the group, including the quarterly Civil War Philatelist magazine, expertizing service, research scholarship, mentor program, periodical archives, auctions, collections, exhibits, and more.

Sundman of Mystic Donates to Boston 2026

Sundman Donation to Boston 2026 World Expo

Donald J. Sundman, president of Mystic Stamp Company, has made a personal donation of $25,000 to Boston 2026 with an additional pledge being made on behalf of the firm.

Considered by many as one of the hobby’s most effective and enthusiastic promoters, Don comes from a family of collectors. His father, Maynard Sundman, founded the Littleton Stamp Company in 1945 catering to collectors out of his home. It greatly expanded through his approval service.

The Sundman family purchased Mystic Stamp Company in 1974 when 19-year-old Don was appointed as general manager alongside his brother, David, who managed coin operations. Today Mystic has over 110 employees at its Camden, NY headquarters and is 100% employee owned.

Don has been at the center of philately’s most notable stories of recent years. He and David broke the 1987 story of the CIA invert through details obtained through their Freedom of Information Act request. Mystic successfully filed a law suit in 1994 to prevent the USPS destruction of the Legends of the West recalled error sheets. Following the firm’s 1998 purchase of the unique U.S. 1 cent Z grill for nearly a million dollars, Don made history again by trading it for the 1918 inverted Jenny plate block in 2005. Mystic’s $50,000 reward offered for the return of two inverted Jenny stamps stolen in 1955 successfully recovered position 76 of the famous sheet of 100 and announced during World Stamp Show-New York 2016 to a worldwide audience. In 2004 Don was elected Chairman of the Council of Philatelists of the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, stepping down in 2021 but remaining on the Board. He was appointed a Trustee of the Philatelic Foundation in 2006. The APS honored him in 2010 with the Luff Award for Outstanding Service. He has sponsored over 8,000 APS members, a society record. His philanthropic endeavors continue to be numerous and noteworthy.
