Updated March 4th: From the Postal Bulletin:
On March 27, 2015, in Kansas City, MO, the U.S. Postal Service® will issue Ferns First-Class Mail® stamps (Forever® priced at 49 cents) in five designs, in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) coil of 3,000 (Item #786700) along with a reprint of the coil of 10,000 (Item #777300). The 3k coil has a 2015 date in the upper right corner of the stamps and the 10k coil has a 2014 date in the lower left corner of the stamps.
The stamps will go on sale nationwide March 27, 2015.
First issued in 2014, these five stamps celebrate the beauty and elegance of ferns. Each of these stamps depicts a close-up photograph of a different species of fern —autumn fern, Goldie’s wood fern, soft shield fern, Fortune’s holly fern, or painted fern. The shapes and textures of the fronds stand out against a stark white background, which highlights the placement of the leaflets along each fern’s stem. Art director Phil Jordan designed the stamps using existing images by photographer Cindy Dyer.

From the USPS Conference Call on February 20th: Reprint, PSA Coils of 3,000 or 10,000, no event, KC first day (Forever design) one has a 2015 predate, one doesn’t, USPS is checking, new printer, Sennett, using offset; last printer was CCL in gravure. March 27th, Kansas City, no ceremony.
Will there be any difference at all between the ferns issued last year (Scott # 4874 – 4878) and this years’ set?
Don’ t know about between last year vs. this year, but there are two (2) versions of this year’s. One has the date (2015) on the bottom left and the other has the date on the upper right ! The USPS numbers seem to be 786704 and 777345. Does anyone else have any info on this?
Believe the 777345 is the 2014 and the 786704 is the 2015.
It looks like the 2015 reprint of the 2014 date code version of the coil of 10K has new Scott numbers. Will the 2015 date code (coil of 3000) have different Scott numbers? Perhaps a subset of the 2015 reprint?
We’ll have to wait and see what Scott does. It recently changed some long-standing policies.
I have a question about the Scott Number assignment. Is 4977a referring to a strip of 5 stamps (2014 date)? Or a single stamp (2015 date, Holly Ferns)?
I believe the “a” designation means the strip of 5 stamps.
As they’re written above, it’s ambiguous. I suspect Scott will change the strip of 5 with the 2014 date to 4977b. If they haven’t done so already.
We have nondenominated 2014 coil fern stamps and denominated (.49) fern stamps dated 2014. What are the Scott numbers for these? You show 4874-78 for both 2014 and 2015 nondenominated (pictured) but none with 49 on the picture.
