I voted “both.” It depends on the size of the issue, but for a setenant set of 4-5 designs that I really like, I’ll look for some FDCs whose cachets pair well with individual stamps as well as ones that fit the whole set.
It is about esthetics, not philately! These are collectibles where appearance dominates my decision process. Miniature works of art should be displayed (and collected) to their best advantage.
