November 21-22, 1998:
Nature and Show Biz -- next year's stamps
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
"Exciting, brilliant, and vibrant." RUNS :02
That's how Postal Service Stamps Manager Azeez Jaffer
describes the 1999 program. It's heavy on entertainment,
with stamps for Daffy Duck, Jimmy Cagney, Broadway
composers like the Gershwins and Rodgers and Hammerstein,
the acting couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, and
Hollywood composers. But Jaffer insists the theme for next
year is the Nature of America:
"The Sonoran Desert, the Aquarium fish, the Arctic
animals, the theme is really reflecting on America
and reflecting on the nature of America."
RUNS :09
Railfans will love the 5 streamlined trains of the 1930s
and 40s. For kids, there are insects and spiders, and
Extreme Sports. There are also stamps for author Ayn Rand...
Frederic Law Olmsted, the man who designed some of our great
public parks....and black activist Malcolm X. The Postal
Service acknowledges not everyone will be happy with that one,
the latest entry in the Black Heritage series.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
