November 14-15, 1998:
Remembering the King of the Cowboys.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
It's going to be another 10 years before we'll have a stamp
for Roy Rogers -- only Presidents can be honored within a
decade of their deaths. But I have a souvenir envelope that
commemorates Rogers right now.
It was postmarked on the day of his death in Victorville,
California....where he lived. The woman who prepared it
drove 2 hours to get that cancellation. The envelope
features a color portrait of him, and a stamp from the
Legends of the West series.
Souvenir envelopes like these are called death covers.
Stamp collectors call any envelope with a stamp and cancel
a cover. But you can commemorate more than just deaths:
They can mark weddings, births, or major news stories like
John Glenn's space flight.
All you need is a stamp, an envelope and enough time to
get them to a post office before closing. You can choose
your local post office, or, if you have enough time, a post
office with either an historical tie-in or one with a name
that just fits your subject.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
