Not just stodgy old men.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

The image most people have of a stamp collector is a quiet
older man -- and we certainly have our share of those -- but
there are also quite a few philatelists who DON'T fit that
picture: Among them, actor Karl Malden, T-V basketball
commentator Digger Phelps...and former test pilot and
astronaut Henry Hartsfield.

"I find it relaxing. I've met a lot of wonderful
people through stamp collecting. I think that's
probably the thing I enjoy most is the people
          I meet."

Hartsfield became a serious collector of turn-of-the-century
Austria and U-S Bureau issues just after he became an
astronaut, and before he piloted or commanded three space
shuttle flights. One reason may have been the very-active
Johnson Space Center stamp club.

          RUNS=:09
"The club membership was huge, because a lot of
foreign people joined, people from all over the
country joined, to get the commemorative covers
          that the club put out."

Surprisingly, Hartsfield doesn't collect space stamps or
space covers himself.

And that's stamp collecting this week.
