The Trump Plan
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The President Trump's budget proposal offers a plan to save the U-S Postal Service. It
looks an awful lot like previous proposals.
The Postal Service is losing billions of dollars a year, almost entirely because it has
been saddled with a requirement unlike that given any other government entity to pay
retiree health benefits.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the budget proposal would allow the agency to drop
Saturday delivery… and drop off mail at clusters of boxes rather than at each home in a
neighborhood. It would also change how rates are set.
Cutting delivery hasn't set well with Congress in the past, although perhaps this Congress
might be more receptive. But with e-commerce deliveries booming, the Postal Service has
actually ADDED a seventh delivery day. A simpler solution might be to eliminate that
pension payment, but that's not in the budget.
