Bad timing.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Canada issued its first Eid stamp recently, recognizing two of the most important
festivals celebrated by Muslims. But it was released the morning after the Manchester
England suicide bombing by a young Muslim.
Something similar happened to the U-S with its first Eid stamp. It was issued September
First, 2001… ten days before the September 11th attacks. Some postal clerks wouldn't
sell the stamp! However, the Muslim-American community bought large quantities of it and
it was successful, so there have been more U-S Eid stamps since then.
It's not just Eid stamps. In Two Thousand, the U-S Postal Service booked time in
mid-November on the cable channel C-Span to announce the following year's stamps. But
that was the year of the never-ending presidential election, with the hanging chads.
C-Span kept bumping the stamp unveiling for election coverage until finally the Postal
Service gave up.
Sometimes real life interferes with our hobbies.
