The Stamp Collecting Caucus

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Visit Capitol Hill this week, and you might think you're at a stamp show.

"A number of congressmen and senators are actually very serious collectors and have some
remarkable items in their collections." :06

Ian Gibson-Smith, a volunteer at the National Postal Museum, says the museum is practically
ON Capitol Hill---

"So we thought it would be rather fun to put together an exhibit on the Hill [in one of the
Congressional buildings] that showcases some of the items from the private collections of
arious congressmen and senators." :09 [:12]

Gibson-Smith says some of the collections are quite remarkable.

"One of the congressmen has a series of plate blocks that have been signed by presidents and
first ladies and astronauts." :06

There's more to the exhibition than just viewing the stamp collections: There will be
activities that introduce stamp collecting to both children AND adults. That's why the event
is being held on Capitol Hill, not at the Museum.

"During the summer, there's an awful lot of tourists and schoolchildren and others who pass
through the Rayburn. We thought this was a marvelous opportunity to showcase stamps to a
whole new audience." :09
