Star Trek Forever Stamps to be Dedicated Sept. 2

Dedication Ceremony Launches Star Trek: Mission New York

s_startrekWASHINGTON — Nearly 50 years to the day of its original airing, the U.S. Postal Service will celebrate the iconic 1960s television show Star Trek by dedicating the Star Trek Forever stamps in New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

The first-day-of-issue ceremony will take place at noon on Friday Sept. 2, and will officially launch Star Trek: Mission New York, a three-day celebration that is expected to draw thousands of Star Trek fans. For tickets to Star Trek: Mission New York go to startrekmissions.com.

The stamps will be available for pre-order the first week of August at usps.com/shop for delivery shortly after Sept. 2. Fans are encouraged to share the news on social media using #StarTrekForever. Visit this link for information on other upcoming stamp dedication ceremonies.

The stamps, under license by CBS Consumer Products, showcase four digital illustrations inspired by classic elements of the television program that premiered Sept. 8, 1966:

  • The Starship Enterprise inside the outline of a Starfleet insignia against a gold background
  • The silhouette of a crewman in a transporter against a red background
  • The silhouette of the Enterprise from above against a green background
  • The Enterprise inside the outline of the Vulcan salute (Spock’s iconic hand gesture) against a blue background

The stamps were designed by Heads of State of Philadelphia, under the art direction of Antonio Alcalá of Alexandria, VA.

The Postal Service is participating in Star Trek: Mission New York through an agreement with Reed Exhibitions and its ReedPOP group, a global producer of fan experiences such as New York Comic Con (NYCC), Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) and others.

At the Internet press briefing, Wayne Youngblood why the Star Trek issue never mentions the name. Is it a licensing issue? he asked. No, replied stamps chief Mary-Anne Penner. “Space The Final Frontier” will be on the full pane’s selvage. Bill Gicher in Stamp Development said the images are well-known enough that the name didn’t need to be stated in the designs.

I asked if there was any news about the long-rumored Science Fiction author stamps: No, no news, was the answer. -LdeV

15 thoughts on “Star Trek (U.S. 2016)

  1. According to postal & Star Trek regs & ‘limitations,’ the artwork is to be limited to just the original series. However, given the artistic format used, am I the only one who sees a very strong connection to the animated series?

  2. While prepping some prototype FDCs for myself, noticed a design ‘error’ on the green stamp. The shape of the ship’s ‘outline’ is not quite correct. First, there is too much hull length on the secondary hull between the primary hull (saucer section) and the warp nacelle pylons. Second, the secondary hull end is too pointed, it should be a blunt rounded end. Third, but not major, the primary hull (saucer section) is a little small. The diameter of the primary is wider than the distance between the exterior sides of the nacelles.
As for the overall design, I think the words “Star Trek” should’ve been part of the design; especially in its iconic font. Or it should alternate with “Space The Final Frontier” on the selvage.

  3. The “Celebrate the Century” stamp sheet of the 1960’s shows a much better looking Startrek Enterprise. These stamps seem plain and lifeless compared to it. You would think it would be better with the technology we have today. I just think they could have made something more pleasing to the eye.

  4. Although the date has not been announced, the stamp is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the shows premier episode which was Sept 8th, 1966. Just based on the Postal Service’s history I would guess the stamp’s release date would be September 8th of this year.

  5. Just got off the phone (8:50am MDT; May 19, 2016) with USPS. Asked if a release date had been set for the Star Trek stamps and was told “No.” The person I talked with did some keyboarding and found two things — the “July ?” already shown here and “summer time.” Either way, I think it’s a bit ridiculous that no date has been set; especially this close to the above guesstimates. Whether or not they’re going for a Sept. (8?) date, at least have the courtesy to make some kind of announcement.

    • Yes, exactly! When I first read “July” and “summer”, I thought they might be out in time for my brother’s birthday in August. It would be cool to put a “Live Long and Prosper” stamp on his card.

I guess Sept 8 makes sense, but it would be nice to know.

  6. Just got off the phone (again!) {6:35am MDT; June 9, 2016} with USPS and asked the same question, “Has a release date been set for the Star Trek stamps?” The person who answered actually seemed surprised by my question. She then replied, “I don’t know, it’s way too early for that.” REALLY ? ? ? “Way too early for that”!?! I’m hoping she was talking time of day at her location and NOT about scheduling release dates! But would she be talking about time at her location??? It was almost like she was an answering service instead of being a USPS employee. Is 9:35am EST too early for USPS people to be at work? With some kind of release date ‘rapidly’ approaching, wouldn’t you think the USPS would be more on the ball? Especially when they’ve set release dates for most of the other stamps planned for release this year!?! Maybe I’m expecting too much or getting too antsy since I’ve been calling about every two-and-a-half weeks since the beginning of March . . . .

    • From Linns OCT 18 (Broadcast OCT 1) Scott Yellow 5132, Red 5133, Green 5134, Blue 5135.

  7. You would think that with all the artistic talent available to the USPS Advisory Board, they would have come up with better designs for this legendary series. They will get my “worst design” vote for 2016 in Linns this year.

  8. Sorry, to say this BUT I think, over all, USPS could have done a design more appealing then what they have done and could have issued more material dedicated to the series like they did with Elvis Presley . Just received Canada’s STAR TREK dedication material. MUCH more appealing. They gave more options in designs and material to choose from. USPS, you need to take notice of our brothers and sisters from the north, they have come out with some nice material.

  9. Took me an hour and a half of calling around and being on hold to find out where, in my area, the “‘special’ postmark that local post offices may use” is going to be available. According to the local customer service person who did some looking around and called me back, in the ENTIRE state of Arizona, the ONLY place is a post office in Tucson. Why? Who knows ! The city is not centrally located like the STATE CAPITOL of Phoenix where I live. In fact, Tucson is 125 miles away!! Sorry, I’m NOT going to make a 5-hour plus round trip for a special postmark. And if the postmark situation in Arizona is the norm, WHY only one city per state to have the special postmark??? I find that ridiculous. I was also told, however, that the postmark would be available on both Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 with those dates. (Big whoop.) The only positive thing I see is that the post mark design is a way more accurate design of the Enterprise than the silhouette design on the green stamp. (Still can’t believe that the designers got the silhouette design of the ship WRONG after more than a year of research!!!)

    • Offering a special cancel is up to the local (or regional) postal people. I don’t believe it’s rationed, certainly not by HQ in Washington. If this one isn’t being offered in Phoenix, it’s a decision being made in Phoenix. You have 30 days to obtain a “field pictorial” by mail, although the results are sometimes less than satisfactory.

  10. This is sold as a Souvenir Pane of 20. Clerks cannot split up, you have to buy 20.
