Buying some new U-S stamps depends on where you live.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
Just before New Year's, loyal Alabamans staged a run on post
offices to buy the special version of the Bear Bryant stamp.
December 31st was its last day of sale, and the Bryant
stamps with a red bar on them were sold at post offices only
in Alabama, or by mail. Post offices in other states got a
different version.
CBS News has learned this year's stamp for author Ayn Rand
will be sold only in New York City and California.
Collectors and fans in other places will have to call the
Postal Service's 800 number.
The agency feels some stamps have little appeal outside
certain areas, so it's printing fewer of them, and
restricting where they'll be sold. That assumes that
Iowans don't move outside their state, and University of
Alabama football fans only live THERE.
Of course, forcing you to order by mail also puts you on the
Postal Service's mailing list, giving it a chance to sell you
other stamps and merchandise.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
