December 12-13, 1998:
Politics in stamp collecting.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
It's that time again: Who's running and who's not running
for the Board of Directors of the American Philatelic
Society, the 53-thousand member national stamp club.
Elections are held every two years.
After a single term as President, John Hotchner has decided
not to run again. He cites a lack of time for his family as
a major reason. In the past year, Hotchner was promoted
within the State Department's Passport Office, and he became
a member of the Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee, which
helps choose stamp subjects.
Throwing his hat into the ring to replace him is Dr. Peter
McCann, chairman of the Board of Vice Presidents, and
president of the University of Maryland Biotechnology
Institute.
In the last election, Hotchner was challenged by writer
Ken Lawrence, and each spent thousands on his campaign.
Turn-out was high, but many members were unhappy with the
politicking. So far, McCann is running unopposed... but
nominations remain open for several months.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
