The Secret List

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Three years ago, someone leaked a list to The Washington Post of stamp subjects the
U-S Postal Service's advisory panel was considering. The panel is called the Citizens
Stamp Advisory Committee, or C-SAC, and the list became known as "Deep C-SAC," a play
on "Deep Throat" from Watergate.

The Postal Service generally works about three years in advance on the stamps it issues,
and the list had the subjects listed by year and category, and even told how far along
the design process was.

At first, Deep C-SAC was right on the money, but over time, the stamp program has
diverged somewhat — but not entirely. And some of the subjects are even showing up this
year, beyond the original scope of the list.

The Legends of Hollywood stamp listed for last year was Elizabeth Taylor. It didn't
happen. Could this be the year? Or are there rights issues? She had children with three
different fathers, and that's been a problem with other celebrities.

A design for a Roy Orbison stamp is ready to go for the music icons series. Maybe now?

And we’ve had Distinguished Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, and almost annual service
medal stamps in the past few years. Deep C-SAC indicates a Distinguished Airmen design
is approved. Hmmm.

None of these subjects is guaranteed, just more likely than others.

I’m Lloyd de Vries of The Virtual Stamp Club. For more on stamps and stamp collecting,
