The nation’s stamp collector.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Daniel Piazza just became the chief curator of philately at the Smithsonian National
Postal Museum... in charge of the national stamp collection. It’s an honor not given
to many.

“There’s a long tradition behind it, and I’m hopeful of carrying that tradition forward.”
LdeV: “How old are you?:
DP: “37.”
LdeV: “Which by stamp collecting terms is...?”
DP: “Adolescent (laughter)”

There are 6 million pieces in the collection.

“99% or more of the material in the collection is stamps, pieces of mail and other
philatelic material.”

The challenge is finding new special exhibits.

“Keeping those changing exhibits going and fresh with material that will appeal to
collectors and the public alike I think is really important.”

There is a downside to being in charge of the national stamp collection. Piazza no longer
collects U-S.

“When you work with that sort of material during the day, to then go home and look at
your own collection, it pales in comparison, and that’s kind of when I switched to putting
more of my effort into the Italy and colonies area.”
