Something old, something new.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

When most people picture a stamp collector, they think of some elderly fuddy-duddy or a
bookworm, or both. That's not Chad Snee. He's 45....and just a few years ago, was on
active duty in Afghanistan.

"I'm one of those few who picked it up as a kid and for the most part, with certain
interludes here and there, I've kept up with it." :08

Snee is the new chief editor of the Scott Stamp Catalogues, the bible for U-S collectors —
many of whom ALSO complain that they're all getting old and there's no next generation.
Snee says you could have heard those complaints 80 or 90 years ago,

"That's been a part of the hobby from the very beginning, because the hobby demands a
level of maturity and discipline and focus that typically comes later in life." :08

But Snee says a new generation and a new way of collecting are on the way.

"There's a large and growing number of collectors out there that engage the hobby solely
through the Internet and other electronic media." :10 They do not go to stamp shows,
they do not read the print publications, they do not interact with fellow hobbyists the
way most of us who have been at it for quite awhile do." :22

And, as editor of the Scott catalogues, Snee is doing his part by getting Scott online
and in electronic formats.
