Virtual Reality

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

A new report from the American Philatelic Society, the nation's biggest stamp collecting
organization, says, quote, "Philatelic exhibitions offering all of the current show
activities (exhibits, dealer bourse, seminars) could be staged in the virtual world right
now" -- that is, on the Internet.

And it predicts that the A-P-S will have a virtual stamp show in 5 years.

Much of that is already happening. Many collectors buy and sell stamps online NOW. There
are web sites where stamps are exhibited. And the A-P-S itself is offering courses online.

I myself run something called The Virtual Stamp Club, where collectors can discuss a
variety of philatelic subjects.

Does this mean the end of the physical stamp show? Maybe not. It's important to see some
stamps in person before you buy them. It's a thrill to get up close to a million-dollar
stamp, and know that it hasn't been "photo-shopped." And it's fun to get together with
stamp collecting friends at a show and just chat.
