Surprise!
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
In early August, The U-S Postal Service will tell us most of the stamps they have planned
next year. Britain and Canada already have.
The key phrase is "most of." Every year, there are some last-minute additions. This year
seems to have more than most, however.
The Postal Service planned all along to issue the Star Wars stamps, but didn't tell us last
summer because the artwork wasn't ready and so the story would get more play in the press --
and it worked.
There will also be a new forty-one-cent version of the Purple Heart stamp. It wasn't on
the schedule, either -- until the public weighed in and said it wanted it.
Canada just announced -- on a television show -- a special sheet of four stamps for singers
Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Paul Anka and Anne Murray. Word came just three weeks before
the release....yup, to get more publicity.
And Britain has added Harry Potter stamps to its program, too, also with a late announcement.
