Behind the scenes of U-S stamps.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

At last month's World Stamp Expo 2000, top U-S Postal Service
stamp designer and planner Terry McCaffrey gave collectors an
insight into why and how stamps are chosen.

For instance, next month's ceremony for the Senator Claude
Pepper stamp honoring the elder-rights activist has been moved
from his home state of Florida to Washington...at the "request"
of Members of Congress.

Expect to see more odd-shaped stamps, which collectors liked,
but don't bother to look at new stamps for hidden images that
require special decoders -- they messed up the stamp designs.

Paintings have been chosen for the next TEN years of Madonna
and Child Christmas stamps - alternating between works in the
National Gallery of Art in Washington and museums elsewhere....
even though the stamps don't sell well.

And there's a design ready for every living president or former
president -- that's five right now. Traditionally, stamps are
issued on his next birthday after a former president dies.

And that's stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
