March 20-21, 1999:
Free Membership in the Nation's Stamp Club
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Maybe there's no such thing as a free lunch... but by the
end of this summer, the American Philatelic Society will
be offering new members a deal that's darn close: Discount
coupons for the same amount as the dues they pay, good at
participating dealers. Someone paying a full year's dues
will get five five-dollar coupons.
A-P-S Secretary Janet Klug, who came up with the idea,
says members are taking a chance when they pay their
dues... why not take some of the gamble out of it?
Membership in many stamp societies is declining, as
members grow older. And there's more competition these
days for leisure-time activities. This gives another
reason to join the A-P-S, of use to everyone from
beginners to advanced.
Most dealers extend twenty per cent discounts to fellow
dealers, and five dollars off on a twenty-five dollar
purchase IS twenty per cent. You won't be able to
combine the coupons with other offers, or give them to
someone else.
Another discount program is in the works for
RENEWING members.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
