February 13-14, 1999:
Wrestling children into collecting stamps.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
"Right now, we're on fire. This is the place to be." :02
Wrestler Diamond Dallas Paige, on the popularity of pro
wrestling. This past week, the Caribbean island of
St. Vincent issued a set of eight stamps, showing Paige
and 7 other wrestlers.
"If they market them nationwide in our country, they'd
sell like hotcakes." :04
And that IS the intended market: Right here in the U-S.
The idea for the stamps came from a company that produces
sports memorabilia. St. Vincent's stamps are intended for
collectors of memorabilia other than stamps: Disney,
Princess Diana, the Titanic, John Lennon.
Is that so bad? Can collectors of memorabilia become
stamp collectors? Can something like Disney or pro
wrestling bring kids into the hobby...and maybe their
parents? Hollywood Hulk Hogan says his eight-year-old son
is interested, and it's not because Dad is on a stamp.
"I'm going to have to run over to my mom's house... and
pull out the old stamp collection because I was into it
big time when I was a kid. I think my son's going to get
me back into it." :08
And that's stamp collecting this week.
