January 3-4, 1998:

The Year of the Tiger.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The Lunar New Year doesn't begin until January 28th, but
both the U-S and Canada issue their Year of the Tiger
stamps this week. These Lunar New Year stamps are
profit-makers for postal services, selling very well in
the Far East...which might explain why among the other
countries issuing Tiger stamps this month is Sweden,
not known for its large Asian community.

Israel recently issued a stamp for an American-based
charity, the Chabad Children of Chernobyl program.

RUNS=:09
"We see these postage stamps as little mini-billboards
affixed to the envelopes that should land in kitchens
and offices all over the world."

Medical director Jay Litvin says Chabad brings children
from the region around the world's worst nuclear
disaster to live in Israel, with better living
conditions and healthcare. At the same time, Chabad
also brings medical equipment to Ukraine and Belarus.
Chabad is better known in this country as the
Lubavitch Jewish sect, based in Brooklyn, New York

And that's stamp collecting this week.
