Hot-button stamps

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Israel recently announced the stamps it plans to issue this year. They include
subjects such as love songs, sports, and theater.

But 2017 is the centennial of Britain's declaration that Jews have a right to
a homeland in Palestine, and there will be a stamp for this Balfour Declaration.

It's also the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War.

Israel plans stamps commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem… and the
building of settlements in what Israelis call Judea and Samaria. Most of the rest
of the world calls that the West Bank. The other disputed territories are also
slated for stamps.

Half a century later, the ownership of these territories is still a matter of
contention between Israel and the Arab world.

That Israel would pass up an opportunity to commemorate its stunning 1967
military victory was unlikely.  But it will be interesting to see the world's
reaction to these stamps.
