Sitting on ceremony
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
When the U-S and other countries issue new stamps, there are often launch events, called
"first day ceremonies" — for the "first day" the stamps are issued.
People associated with the new issues speak: Postal officials, the stamp designer and
artist, like the Kwanzaa stamp's Synthia Saint James —
"Here I am excited that I was chosen and commissioned to do the piece for the 50th
anniversary." RUNS :05
…. Or someone related to or involved with the stamp subject. Often, you get a feel for
just how much the issue means to people: The outpouring of emotion and gratitude from
the Indian community at the Diwali stamp ceremony, for example, was incredible. Listen
as the stamp design was unveiled:

In the U-S, the public is almost always invited to these ceremonies, but unless you
happen to live nearby, attending may not be practical.
However, recently, the U-S Postal Service has been live-streaming more and more of its
first day ceremonies online: You can find them on facebook-dot-com slash U-S-P-S. There
also are past ceremonies under "videos."
