Show ‘n Tell

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Many stamp shows have exhibits — displays of mostly rare or unusual stamps. In some cases,
these exhibitions are competitive: there are rules to follow, and points are awarded not
only because of the rarity of the material, but also its presentation.

It’s a lot of work... so I asked some top exhibitors, “Why?”

(Ron Klimley) “It gives me an opportunity to get out and show what I’ve done, and share
that with other folks.”

(Charles O’Brien) “I love the challenge.”

(Kristin Patterson) “I have to do a lot of research, because I don’t want to perpetuate the
wrong information, and I love doing that research.”

(Tim Bartsche) “By exhibiting, I learn more about my material than I would ever learn sitting
in a bunch of three-ring binders.”

(Nick Lombardi) “It helps me focus on my collecting areas and it’s just a lot of fun.”

(Denise Stotts) “It’s just a lot of fun.”

(Douglas Clark) “I like competition.”

(Cheryl Ganz) “It just takes me to another level, kind of kicking it up a notch.”

(Al Kugel) “It’s a challenge to be able to create something out of a shoebox full of covers
and a few notes, and make it into something that will educate other people when they see your
exhibit.”

(Bethel Strosser) “I exhibit because I want to attract other people into the hobby.”

(Jay Stotts) “I exhibit because it forces me to get my collections organized, find out what I
don’t have, get that, and improve my knowledge.”

(Ralph Nafziger) “It helps me organize my collection, and also, I like sharing it with other
people.”

(Tom Fortunato) “Exhibiting is probably nothing more than adult show ‘n tell, and I like to
show, and I like to tell.”
