Biting the hand.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The U-S just issued stamps featuring the Peanuts cartoon characters. There’s a new
movie in the theaters featuring the Peanuts cartoon characters.

So a press representative for the Postal Service e-mailed several online movie bloggers
and suggested they mention the stamps when they were reviewing the movie.

And what a reaction from some of them! You’d think Lucy had pulled the football from
their blogs... but instead, they kicked the Postal Service. One referred to it as
“sad sack,” another as “the weirdest.”

Hey, it’s called publicity. If you’re a journalist, or trying to be one, you get story
pitches. Some you consider, some you reject.

I’ve known the Postal Service publicist for many years, and he often comes up with
innovative ways to promote stamps. When the U-S issued stamps featuring mahogany
speedboats eight years ago, he actually found a magazine that specialized in mahogany
speedboats and placed a story in it.

This was his attempt to reach a new audience. I hope he won’t be discouraged. Because
you know something? It worked. They mentioned the stamps.
