Play ball!

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

[sound effect #1]

As the baseball season begins, it’s interesting to note the strong relationship between
the sport and U-S stamps. The first U-S baseball stamp was issued in 1939, for the opening
of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the alleged hundredth anniversary of the first game.
It would be more than 20 years before another team sport showed up on a U-S stamp,
basketball.

There have been baseball stamps for players, stadiums, the first professional game, the
push for Olympic baseball and even the song “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.”

Football didn’t get on the scoreboard until 30 years after baseball and still trails in
scoring. Hockey is still in the penalty box as far as U-S stamps are concerned. Basketball
and soccer, pretty much out of bounds.

In fact, if any sport rivals baseball on U-S stamps, it’s skiing, because of the winter
olympics stamps.

So.... batter up!
