The Queen of Psychedelic Soul

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

[music]

It’s going to be quite a year for Janis Joplin: A Broadway tribute show is running and
now there’s word that later this year, the U-S will issue a stamp honoring her. It will
be part of the Music Icons series that has already featured Lydia Mendoza, Johnny Cash
and Ray Charles.

Joplin helped pave the way for female rock ‘n roll singers, breaking through in 1967 at
the Monterey Pop Festival. She was also one of the top attractions at Woodstock two years
later. Fans say her stage presence was electric. Unfortunately, it was short-lived: She
died in 1970 of a heroin overdose at the age of 27.

Many of those fans who collect stamps are looking forward to this one, although the
release date hasn’t been announced. Her birthday just passed. She would have been 71.
Perhaps we’ll see the stamp with the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in
April.
