Two kinds of stamp dealers.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Next time you're at a stamp show, look around at the dealers behind the tables: Who's
really making a living selling stamps?

The answer is not many. Quite a few are retired, and living off their pensions. Some
inherited money, and a few inherited the stamp business. Nearly all have another source
of income.

It's not just the dealers at shows, but it's harder to tell about those selling on the
Internet. There aren't many stamp STORES left, but several proprietors have told me
they had opened stores because they'd retired and their wives wanted them out of the
house!

Some stamp dealers run their operations like a business. A significant number, though,
are just selling off their collections or duplicate material. They're happy to put some
cash in their pockets. That lack of commercialism helps keep prices down in the stamp
market.

That's good for collectors, of course, but it's something to think about if YOU want
to go into the stamp business.
