The Definitive Word.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Some of the most interesting U-S stamps each year are what's called regular issues – also
known as "definitives." These are the stamps issued to pay specific rates, anywhere from
one cent up to five or ten dollars.

They're usually half the size of commemorative stamps, have simpler designs, and are on
sale for years.

There's always a flag stamp available at the first-class rate.

Other definitive subjects this year include kaleidoscope designs, puffins, seed packets,
and apples.

These are the stamps you're most likely to see on your mail. They're usually issued in
convenient formats, like booklets that fit in your wallet or a roll…. And when a mailer
comes into the post office and says, " Gimme a book of stamps," the clerk reaches for one
of these.

And the other thing that makes them appealing to some collectors is that because they're
printed in such large quantities, there are often varieties. Finding them all can be a
fun and not too expensive challenge.
