Waiting for Lady Bird.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

One of the late additions to the U-S stamp program this year was a set of stamps honoring
Lady Bird Johnson. This year marks the centennial of the former first lady’s birth.

But since the announcement in mid-summer, the information about this issue has come in
dribs and drabs, and what’s announced has changed several times.

At first, it was =A= stamp. Now it’s what’s called a “souvenir sheet” -- several different
stamps on a single sheet, with a background design. One of the stamps will show her
official White House portrait as First Lady, on the right side of the sheet. The others on
the left are reproductions of the “Beautify America” stamps issued while Lyndon Johnson was
president. Beautification was her cause as First Lady.

I’m told that what I saw in August is pretty much what we’ll see at our post offices
eventually.... but a final design hasn’t been released.

The original plan was to issue it on December 22nd, her birthday. Now we’re hearing late
November.

Sometimes information about a stamp issue is held up because the heirs and others involved
can’t agree. Sometimes there are other factors, like making a big splash with the
announcement.

My money’s on the latter.
