Old Objective, New Media

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

The U-S Postal Service has tried a lot of different ways to grab attention for the
following year's stamp program. One year, it rented Lego-Land and had giant replicas
of the following year's designs built out of the plastic blocks.

In 2000, it arranged to make the announcement on C-SPAN....but wouldn't you know it?
That was the year of the hanging-chad presidential election, and C-SPAN was busy
covering that, so the stamp announcement kept getting pushed off.

Usually, the announcements are made late in the year, although the stamp collecting
press gets a look in early August.

This year, word will come on the Internet and social media. Each weekday, starting
in mid-July, the Postal Service is unveiling one of the 2012 stamps on its stamp
collecting website, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

In the first week, we've seen Cherry Blossoms, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Love Ribbons,
publisher John Johnson, and bicycles.

The hope is to use new media to reach new potential stamp collectors.
