Charity begins at the Post Office

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

The U-S is about to issue another charity stamp. That's one where you pay a little bit
more for the stamp than you would for a regular letter-rate stamp. The difference goes
to a designated charity.

This September's Semi-Postal, as they're called, shows an Amur or Siberian tiger. It's
called Save Vanishing Species. The extra 11 cents raised by this stamp will go to an
international coalition of wildlife groups.

Other countries issue lots of charity stamps, but this will only be the fourth U-S
semi-postal. The first was for Breast Cancer Research, and is still on sale. The other
two were Heroes of 2001 and Stop Family Violence.

All of them, including this one, were mandated by Congressional legislation. Issuing
stamps for social causes is bi-partisan.
