The Odd Couple

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

You'd think collecting stamps -- which go on your mail -- and the Internet -- the
supposed killer of postal mail-- could be mortal enemies. But it's not true.

In fact, the Internet may have been something of a renaissance for stamp collecting.

It's a matter of communication. Stamp dealers can now reach a much bigger marketplace,
through their own websites and auction sites like eBay. Stamp BUYERS have more choices,
too, from all over the world. Contacting a foreign postal administration, for instance,
used to take a couple of weeks or a very expensive phone call. Now it's a matter of a
couple of hours by e-mail.

And there's also community: While a stamp collector used to talk with others with similar
specialties maybe once a year, or through an occasional magazine, now the chat about air
mails and first day covers and errors and what-have-you goes on 24-7.

Stamp collecting news also travels fast these days -- via the Internet.
