Mexican Makeover

The Stamp Collecting Report. I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The Mexican postal system, Correos de Mexico, is infamous for thievery.. losing mail ...
or delivering it late. Many people have given up on the agency, and use other means to
deliver packages and letters. Mexicans only get an average of 7 pieces of mail a year...
compared to an average of 7-HUNDRED per person in the U-S.

And it costs 50 percent more to mail a letter in Mexico than it does north of the
border.

Correos de Mexico has a new chief...educated at Harvard...with experience in Brazil. But
it's an uphill battle for her. She says the service has been starved of resources -- many
clerks still use manual typewriters...and there's been a policy not to ship the mail out
to the next post office until the bag is full.

So.. the Mexican government is giving the postal service a makeover -- a new symbol, new
uniforms, paint for the post offices, and a new color scheme -- hot pink and lime green.

You might say it's like putting lipstick on a pig.

And it makes you appreciate the U-S Postal Service.
