O-J Makes The Case

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Before someone other than a president can be honored on a U-S stamp, he or she has to be
dead five years. Until late last year, it was ten years, but the public's collective memory
being what it is, the Postal Service decided to shorten the waiting period.

When someone famous and well-respected dies, the question inevitably arises, "Why have ANY
waiting period?"

And I present to you one Orenthal James Simpson.

When he retired from pro football to a career in TV and movies, O-J was worthy of being
honored on a postage stamp. Now?

Other countries DO put living people on their stamps. Hockey great Wayne Gretzky was on a
Canadian stamp, a few years before a gambling scandal that apparently involved his wife.
Australia has issued stamps honoring its gold medal winners at the Olympics immediately after
they won. What if any of them had been disqualified for doping?

No, thanks, I'll take a little perspective with my stamps.
