The Contenders

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Where can you buy and sell stamps online? The obvious answer, the first one that pops
into mind, is the same as for almost anything else: eBay. It's become a major factor in
stamp collecting. Nothing else online -- or maybe anywhere -- compares in volume -- the
number of stamps for sale, the number of customers.

But there are several sites that are trying to get at least a piece of the action for
themselves. They see themselves as offering more emphasis on stamp collecting, and having
more of a feel for what stamp collectors want.

One of them is StampWants-dot-com,
which has the backing of some well-known stamp dealers.

"We actually want to be the number-one place online to buy and sell stamps, and we think that
we can do that."
RUNS :04

...says StampWants C-E-O Mark Rosenberg. To draw attention to the site, StampWants is giving
away one of the famous inverted airplane stamps.

Another contender is Stamps-to-go-dot-com -- with the numeral two. Unlike eBay and StampWants,
Stamps-to-go only has fixed-price sales, no auctions. It also handles the payments, and requires
 PayPal.

And a third is stamp-store-dot-org, run by the American Philatelic Society, the national
stamp collecting organization. Again, fixed prices, but the material is guaranteed by the A-P-S.

There's material -- and customers -- on each of the sites not found on the others.
