Everywhere At Once

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

For most of the past century, U-S stamps were released in one or a handful of cities
first, then everywhere else the following day. Occasionally, an issue thought to have
wide interest would go on sale everywhere at once. Next year, that's going to change,
says Dave Failor of the Postal Service.

"We're going to be able to sell the stamps everywhere in the country on the same day."
RUNS :04

Local postal clerks didn't always understand when stamps were supposed to go on sale,
resulting in arguments with collectors and sometimes early releases.

"We just want to get the stamps on sale and get them out there in the hands of the
public and kind of get rid of some of the confusion about why you could buy them some
place one day and not another place."
RUNS :08

Failor says there will still be special launch events, called first day ceremonies.

"There's still be only one official first-day of issue location, whatever city is
picked. Everybody else will have the ability to have a first day of sale celebration
if they want to."
RUNS :10

And many will. Some have already been holding their own events ... days later.
