Curious George's Curious Journey

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The eight new Favorite Children's Book Animals stamps feature some beloved characters, such as
Maisy and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Another is Curious George, the little monkey created by H-A and Margret Rey. But author Louise
Borden says Curious George was almost lost to the Holocaust: The Reys, German Jews, fled Paris
as the Nazis invaded.

"They rode these bicycles out of Paris on a rainy morning, carrying with them their very
precious manuscripts and artwork, and they had to leave most of their belongings."

Borden, who has written a book, "The Journey That Saved Curious George," sees the trip's
influences on the little monkey.

"When I look at the 7 original books about Curious George, I see bicycles, I see ocean-going
vessels."

And Borden says stamps helped her research HER book.

"I looked at postmarks, and the dates of those postmarks were very important in the research and
tracking the chronology."

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
