Every year the Postal Service gets some forty thousand requests for a stamp, and this year,
singer Roy Orbison is one of them.
His widow and her record company have launched a campaign. A press release claims a Roy
Orbison stamp has the support of dozens of members of Congress.
It also hints that next year, Orbison's 70th birthday, would be nice. However, the
Two-Thousand-Six stamp program has already been announced, and Orbison isn't on it.
Orbison's biggest hits, sung with his trademark vibrato, came in the early Nineteen-Sixties,
but he was all but forgotten by the end of the decade. He wasn't re-discovered for some 20
years, when several films featured his songs. "Pretty Woman" came out more than a year after
his death.
Being on a stamp won't make your family rich, but it does help ensure that you won't be
forgotten again.
