Dumb, dumb, dumb

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Next month, the Postal Service is issuing its Old Glory prestige booklet. It
features five stamps depicting patriotic knicknacks: An Uncle Sam toy, a
campaign ribbon, a needlepoint bookmark, a fan, and a woodcarving, There are
also additional pages with photographs and text.

"We think this is going to be gangbusters," the chief of stamp development
told reporters last summer, and promised it would be even more widely
distributed to post offices than the popular submarines booklet was a few
years ago.

Not so. NOW we're told that the Old Glory booklet will only be sold in New
York, where it's being issued, and at special retail postal outlets
elsewhere. Regular window clerks, some of whom were looking forward to this
issue, won't be able to get them.

That's because it's a philatelic product, and not really intended for use in
the mail, a postal spokeswoman told me.

That begs the question: If they're not intended for use on mail....are they
stamps...or stickers?

And that's stamp collecting this week.
