Charity and Stamps

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

As we head into the season of giving thanks and good will toward men, it's
heartening to know that the Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp has now
raised nearly 30 million dollars for research, while the Heroes of Two
Thousand One stamp has garnered five-and-a-half million for the victims of
the terrorist attacks.

In about a year, we'll see another special stamp -- one that costs more than
a regular stamp, with the additional money going to charity -- for domestic
violence.

These are important causes, worthy of every cent. But why these three
charities? They had strong congressional sponsors.

Other charities got pushed aside. Congress earlier had ordered the Postal
Service to solicit suggestions, consider the merits, and then choose five.
Thirty-seven subjects were proposed, but then the congressional favorites
jumped to the head of the line.

The earliest the program can start now is Two Thousand Six -- but the smart
money expects Congress to muscle in again.

And that's stamp collecting this week.
