The non-collecting philatelist.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Betsy Towle of Tucson is active in stamp collecting programs
for children, director of the Postal History Foundation for
adults, and she manages one of the country's major stamp
shows, but here's a surprise.

"I don't collect any philatelic material at all."
RUNS :02

The ex-school teacher learned about stamp collecting from
her husband...

"I was a gopher -- 'Go-fer' this, 'go-fer' that -- and I
learned all about the hobby."
RUNS :04

...and even maintained his collection for awhile after he
died...but she found stamps useful not for leisure, but
for her work.

"I'm an educator. I became very active in the children's
program using stamps to teach children subject matter."
RUNS :06

From there, her involvement with philately just grew to
include running the Foundation and the show.

Why use stamps in the classroom?

"No matter what you want to teach, you can teach with
stamps."
RUNS :03

The Postal Service is using two of the Foundation's
computer programs now to educate through stamps, and some
day, Towle would like to produce software to educate
children about...stamp collecting.

And that IS stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
