These stamps give you a chance to discover the sweet stories behind some of our favourite treats.<\/p>\n<p>Working with designer s Roy White and Liz Wurzinger of Vancouver\u2019s Subplot Design Inc., illustrator Mary Ellen Johnson began her assignment in the kitchen, baking the five delectable desserts chosen for the stamps, photographing them, and then creating oil paintings of each. Subplot reinforced the culinary concept with <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8885\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_nanaimo-300x287.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_nanaimo-300x287.png 300w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_nanaimo-150x143.png 150w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_nanaimo-314x300.png 314w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_nanaimo.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>a recipe card-inspired design that shows a truly satisfying slice of creativity.<\/p>\n<p>The Nanaimo bar (1), a no-bake dessert bar, is named after the city of Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. A crumb crust of chocolatey coconut is topped with rich, creamy custard and covered with a layer of melted chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>An original Canadian recipe, Saskatoon berry pie (2) is a local delight, with the berries, tasting like a mix of almonds and apples, wrapped in flaky pastry. A staple for Indigenous peoples and early settlers, the berries are high in fibre, protein and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8884\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_tart-300x279.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_tart-300x279.png 300w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_tart-150x140.png 150w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_tart-323x300.png 323w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_tart.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>antioxidants. Their name is derived from the Cree word <em>mis\u00e2skwat\u00f4mina<\/em>, which also inspired the name of the city of Saskatoon, meaning \u201cat the Saskatoon berry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The earliest published Canadian recipe of butter tarts (3) dates back to 1900. An integral part of eastern Canadian cuisine, this sugary treat has inspired tours and tasting festivals. Ontario\u2019s Best Butter Tart Festival and Contest, held annually in Midland, attracts bakers from across the province and is the largest celebration of its kind in Canada.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8882\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_sugarpie-300x274.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_sugarpie-300x274.png 300w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_sugarpie-150x137.png 150w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_sugarpie-329x300.png 329w, http:\/\/virtualstampclub.com\/lloydblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/can_sweet_sugarpie.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A staple of Quebec patisseries, sugar pie (4) (<em>tarte au sucre<\/em>) traces its origins to France. Colonists brought the recipe for the pie along with them \u2013 but since brown sugar was a rare commodity in New France, early French-Canadian versions used maple syrup as a sweetener.<\/p>\n<p>Believed to be an early adaptation of an English steamed pudding, blueberry grunt (5) gets the name from the sound it makes as the blueberries bubble and steam under a dumpling topping. The popular dessert has been enjoyed by generations of Maritimers, who came up with this delicious way to use a bumper crop of local blueberries.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
