Telling a story.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Do you know where the city of Denver's name comes from?.

It's named after James William Denver, who at the time had never been there. He was
honored because he was governor of the Territory that included Colorado.

"If you could ingratiate yourself to the territorial governor, then it was always
thought that you could get more of an advantage for your local town"

Bill Johnson has an exhibit of James Denver material, including pieces of mail, a
stamp collecting specialty known as postal history.

"I have tried to build my exhibit utilizing as much of his person al or his family's
correspondence as possible."

But not much in Johnson's exhibit is from the Colorado city. James Denver only visited
the city twice....years later.

"They didn't pay any attention. It terribly upset him, so after his second visit in
the early 1880s, he never went back."

Denver became a Washington insider.

"He knew all the presidents, knew all of the top-level politicians, but he just kind
of faded off into history, where that a number of years ago, it was believed in Denver
that the city wasn't named after an individual."

But today, Bill Johnson's stamp collecting exhibit brings James William Denver back to
life.
